Accepting the Aging of Our Parents

For many people, parents are the closest thing they have to a real-life superhero. Endless words of wisdom, delicious home-cooked meals, and tolerating us when we were teenagers have formed a bond that can’t be replaced. Unfortunately, there will be a time when dad starts to look a little weaker and mom’s memory isn’t what it used to be. It can be difficult to accept that the people you have looked up to your entire life are getting older and changing. While some level of change is inevitable, there are things that you can do to make the experience easier.

Plan Ahead

One good thing about aging is that we know it’s going to happen. This gives us plenty of time to put a plan into place! Hopefully, you are prepared before any sign of slowing down is shown by your parents, but it is okay if not. When you first see signs of decreased independence, start making the important decisions, like how will you care for them, where they will stay, and if you need assistance. Planning ahead also gives you time to mentally prepare for the emotionally taxing reminder that your parents are only human.

Communicate

Communication is key. You need to have a clear understanding with your parents, family, and friends about what will happen if their condition deteriorates further. The last thing you need to be doing in a situation like that is arguing! Also, find a personal connection that you can talk to. This is not the easiest experience, but it will feel a whole lot better knowing someone has your back. Whether it is a friend or a support group of people in the same situation – find someone and talk!

Understand

Certain things typically come with growing old. Often, these things include weakening mentally and physically, and could even include certain disorders. You may not be able to change everything, but you can be there and make things better. Realize that every moment with your parents is beautiful and continue making memories with your family.
